I think he needs to look more... blood thirsty, more rage! They have gone beyond the point of control and they only feel raw anger and impulsive aggression.
Everything else is just what it should be

Red? The armor is bronze, since heīs a Devourer, one of ANgronīs bodyguards (as if he needed any), and itīs reflecting red light from explosions or something. Also, I thought it would be a nice hint about the future of the Legion.

Honestly, with names like "Bloodrage", "Devourer" and "World Eaters", was anyone really surprised this Legion went just a bit crazy?

The names were probably less of a clue than the fact that they pounded pain rods into their brains to turn themselves into raving psychotics on purpose.

The World Eaters definitely stood out as being "Legion most likely to turn on the Emperor like a rabid badger" way before Lorgar took his spiritual journey into Crazyville. Angron was the only Primarch to fall to the sales pitch of "Hey bro, wanna go kill Dad?"

Well yeah, there was that too I guess - probably not the best idea to hammer agony spikes into the brains of killing machines, even if daddy did it first.

Awful idea. Thoroughly broke the Legion as a decent fighting force. Plus it killed all their psykers. And of course they couldn't be removed, ever.
And meanwhile Big E watches in the background, wondering if He should step in before things get out of hand...
Nah!

To be honest, they were doomed from the start due to having a gladiator nutter for a Primarch, especially one no-one thought to check was mentally stable after being forced to watch his friends be butchered before being whisked away to "cowardly" safety. Have you ever the Dornian Heresy? That provides a much better solution to this problem then the actual cannon itself.

 Father of the millennium right there! "My spies tell me that my dear son Angron has been headbutting his own Space Marines to death and suffering from endless rage headaches; maybe I should do something. But that *would* get in the way of forcing loyal Lorgar to literally eat all those awe-inspiring religious books he wrote about me before kicking his face in and calling him a theist tard...."

Lorgar was understandable, I feel. E was quite deliberately and sensibly trying to create a secular Imperium. The very fact that the Word Bearers took their reprimand so badly reinforced how out of line they were. And there was no way to predict that they'd do a complete 180 and turn to Chaos... well, except for that whole precognition thing, but whatever. My point is that Erebus is a dick.

But yeah, Angron is a glaring, gaping hole in E's record of judgment. Lorgar spent much of the Betrayer novel wondering just what the hell He was thinking plucking Angron from his homeworld, handing him a Legion, and then essentially washing His hands of the matter. There was way too much that could have gone wrong. And it did.

I must respectfully disagree with you there, most venerable Tech Magos; the Emperor was trying to create a secular Imperium precisely because He knew and understood the nature of the Chaos gods (aka, they were real) BUT the only way such an Imperium could have defeated the gods themselves was to be completely emotionally neutral, since it's emotion and not active prayer/belief that sustains Chaos. Why didn't He just bow to the inevitable, allow everyone to worship Him as the god He truly is and use that status to warn everyone against the dangers of the Warp? Furthermore, it wasn't exactly a mere "reprimand" against the Word Bearers: He had the Ultramarines destroy their most cherished cathedral city in front of them and then forced them to kneel in the rubble! That wasn't so much "Enlightened Secularism" as "Extremist Atheist Asshole" behavior.

No argument here in that regard. One thing though that I can't remember: did the World Eaters have the same assortment of camp-followers and Remembrancers as the other Legions? I imagine such an assortment could have provided information on their descent into madness to the Emperor if they hadn't been brutally murdered first.

It's true that the Chaos Gods were created without active worship, and perhaps could have been sustained without knowledge of them, but to endeavor to make a galaxy-spanning civilization that is "emotionally neutral" is impossible. Unless he basically surrendered to the Adeptus Mechanicus and allow them to run everything.
I will agree that what the Emperor did was a dick move, no doubt, but He was trying to make a point, and He did: Lorgar's faith died a brutal and painful death, and he no longer worshiped Big E. What He didn't see coming was that the Legion would just look for a new religion to follow.

And yes, the Eaters did have remembrancers, but I believe they were all killed immediately prior to all that Istvaan hulabaloo. Which they should have seen coming too, frankly. After turning traitor, the Eaters did still have a lot of mortals around, surprisingly. It wasn't until Angron went daemon prince that the Legion started shedding humans like excess hair.

Blood Angels, Death Guard, Night Lords, Dark Angels...Not the kind of names which actually back the concept of "hey, we are the good guys and are here to liberate you!".

It makes you wonder if apothecaries were actually created to treat the terror induced heart attacks amongst civilian populations in the wake of Imperial compliances.
